Modules for which every non-cosingular submodule is a summand
A module $M$ is lifting if and only if $M$ is amply supplemented and every coclosed submodule of $M$ is a direct summand. In this paper, we are interested in a generalization of lifting modules by removing the condition"amply supplemented" and just focus on modules such that every non-cosingular submodule of them is a summand. We call these modules NS. We investigate some gen...
متن کاملEvery Banach Space is Reflexive
The title above is wrong, because the strong dual of a Banach space is too strong to assert that the natural correspondence between a space and its bidual is an isomorphism. This, from a categorical point of view, is indeed the right duality concept because it yields a self adjoint dualisation functor. However, for many applications the non–reflexiveness problem can be solved by replacing the n...
متن کاملSeparable Banach Space Theory Needs Strong Set Existence Axioms
We investigate the strength of set existence axioms needed for separable Banach space theory. We show that a very strong axiom, Π1 comprehension, is needed to prove such basic facts as the existence of the weak-∗ closure of any norm-closed subspace of `1 = c0. This is in contrast to earlier work [6, 4, 7, 23, 22] in which theorems of separable Banach space theory were proved in very weak subsys...
متن کاملOn sets of vectors of a finite vector space in which every subset of basis size is a basis
It is shown that the maximum size of a set S of vectors of a k-dimensional vector space over Fq, with the property that every subset of size k is a basis, is at most q+1, if k ≤ p, and at most q + k − p, if q ≥ k ≥ p + 1 ≥ 4, where q = ph and p is prime. Moreover, for k ≤ p, the sets S of maximum size are classified, generalising Beniamino Segre’s “arc is a conic” theorem. These results have va...
متن کاملOn sets of vectors of a finite vector space in which every subset of basis size is a basis II
This article contains a proof of the MDS conjecture for k ≤ 2p− 2. That is, that if S is a set of vectors of Fq in which every subset of S of size k is a basis, where q = p, p is prime and q is not and k ≤ 2p − 2, then |S| ≤ q + 1. It also contains a short proof of the same fact for k ≤ p, for all q.
